State police in Somerset County have identified a man killed in a crash Wednesday evening.

They say 38-year-old Matthew Gindlesperger, of Berlin, was driving eastbound along East Mud Pike in Brothersvalley Township just after 5:30 p.m.

Troopers say he got into the westbound lane in an attempt to pass another car while cresting a hill. At the same time, another car traveling in the same lane was coming up the hill.

They say Gindlesperger applied his brakes but failed to maintain control of his car. The driver of the second car tried to move off to the shoulder but was hit head on by Gindlesperger's car.

Troopers say Gindlesperger wasn't a wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics after being extricated from his car.
