A Redmond High School counselor has been arrested for allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with a student, the Redmond Police Department announced in a news release Friday.

The RPD said 35-year-old Derik Detweiler, of Kenmore, was taken into custody without incident in Cody, Wyoming, on Thursday. Detweiler will remain in custody until he is extradited back to Washington.

The King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Detweiler with communication with a minor for immoral purposes, sexual misconduct with a minor in the second degree and supplying liquor to a minor. It’s currently unclear when Detweiler will return to King County to face his charges. Police told KOMO News Friday it is dependent on the extradition process in Wyoming.

“We are thankful to the student for having the courage to come forward, as this relationship likely would have continued,” Redmond Police Chief Darrell Lowe said. “We encourage parents to have conversations with their children that if they hear or see something concerning, they should tell a trusted adult immediately. We also remind parents to monitor their children’s social media activity and report anything suspicious.”

Detweiler has been on administrative leave from his job with the Lake Washington School District since May 22 when the 17-year-old victim came forward with the allegations, telling school officials she had an ongoing romantic relationship with Detweiler.

In a statement Friday, the district stated they are cooperating with the police investigation.

“Lake Washington School District takes the protection of students very seriously,” Superintendent Dr. Jon Holmen said in a statement. “At this time, we will make no further comment out of respect for student confidentiality and the integrity of the investigative process. Student health, safety, and welfare remain LWSD’s paramount concern throughout this process. LWSD will continue to take appropriate actions to fulfill that goal.”

According to court documents, the relationship has been going on for months and the two communicated through WhatsApp.

“Detweiler’s overbearing affection for the student became too much. At one point Detweiler gave the student a key to his apartment as a gift," court documents state.

The student also told police Detweiler showed the student his guns at his home and showed her how to load and unload the pistols.

“Detweiler told her if she ever left him, he would kill himself with the guns,” court documents say.

The student also told police they had dinner at Detweiler’s home, and he served her several glasses of wine until she felt intoxicated, and then he started to kiss her.

According to court documents, the communication between the two started on March 29 and continued until the student blocked Detweiler on May 22 and reported the relationship to school officials.

Court documents also detail alleged messages sent from Detweiler to the student, saying, “I could kiss you forever,” and, “More than I ever ever have. Want you in my bed, my hands on your body. You sleeping deeply in my arms.”

According to police, the school district immediately notified them and began to investigate. Jill Green, a public information officer with Redmond police, told KOMO News all the evidence supported probable cause for the charges.

King County prosecutors requested bail be set at $500,000. Detweiler is due in court on June 13.

It’s unclear at this point if there are any other victims, but police are asking anyone with additional information or other potential victims to contact the Redmond Police Department at 425-556-2500.

Police also shared additional resources can be found at the King County Sexual Assault Resource Center at 888-998-6423 or Harborview Center for Sexual Assault and Traumatic Stress at 206-744-1600.
