Community group hosts active assault community training as mass shootings rise nationally

The number of mass shootings nationally has been steadily increasing in the past years. Many groups have been organizing community trainings on what to do if one takes place. The West End Improvement Group hosted an active assault community training demonstration to address this issue. According to the Gun Violence Archive there have already been 93 mass shootings in the united states since the start of the new year, that’s more mass shootings than days in 2023.

Low voter enthusiasm could be big problem for Biden

WASHINGTON (TND) — Poor polling numbers continue to dog the President as he seeks a second term and other polling suggests his base might not be too excited for the 2024 rematch. President Joe Biden gave the commencement address Sunday to graduates at the HBCU Morehouse College in Atlanta. Some students protested by turning around during his speech, while there were demonstrations outside over the handling of the Israel-Hamas war. The foreign conflict protests have boiled over on college campuses over the past two months.

Penn State fires OC Mike Yurcich following loss to Michigan

University Park, PA (WJAC) — Penn State has fired its Offensive Coordinator Mike Yurcich following the Nittany Lions' 24-15 loss to Michigan on Saturday. According to multiple reports, Yurcich was relieved of his coaching duties on Sunday, a decision that was confirmed by the University Sunday afternoon. Yurcich was hired by Penn State in 2021 after serving as the OC the year prior at the University of Texas. Penn State Insider Audrey Snyder notes that Yurcich' replacement will be the sixth offensive coordinator under head coach James Franklin.

PSU celebrates landmark law with march, rally

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (WJAC) — Thursday marked the 50th anniversary of Title IX becoming law. The landmark law's had an impact on the lives of American women, and people in Centre County celebrated its signing at Penn State University. It was a long, difficult march to achieve Title IX. Penn State celebrated that on Thursday by marching from the "We Are" statue to Old Main, where they held a rally.

Storms cause power outages in Cambria County, Penelec reports

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — More than 10,000 customers in Cambria County lost power as severe thunderstorms rolled through the region Wednesday evening, according to Penelec. According to Penelec, 10,422 customers in Cambria County were without power just before 5:30 p.m. Penelec says 3,280 outages were reported in Johnstown City, and another 1,188 were reported in East Taylor Township. Severe thunderstorms rolled through Wednesday evening knocking down numerous trees in its path.

Country music star enlists in military during live show at Grand Ole Opry

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — Country musician Craig Morgan enlisted into the U.S. Army Reserve this weekendduring a live show at the Grand Ole Opry. Morgan, an Army veteran, was sworn in as a staff sergeant on Saturday in front of a sold out crowd at the Opry. He previously served 17 years in the Army and Army Reserve with the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions an E-6 Staff Sergeant and Fire Support Specialist.

DuBois gym hosts lifting tournament; raises money for youth programs

DUBOIS, Pa. (WJAC) — The Western Pennsylvania Police Athletic League (WPAL) in DuBois held its annual Winter Warrior Showdown weightlifting competition Saturday. The proceeds from the competition go toward the WPAL's youth programs. "People like tend to think that like weight-lifting's kind of get hard into, but it's really easy," lifter Nathan Shaffer, 18, told 6 News. "You just go to a gym, you'll see if there's a competition or something, and then you lift up the big, heavy circles.

Invasive insect species threatens PA multi-billion dollar industries

STATE COLLEGE - An invasive insect species from China continues to grow in population size and it's causing big concerns for our local agriculture. Scientists said the Lantern Fly is a massive threat to Pennsylvania and Penn State is helping to spearhead control efforts. It was first discovered in Pennsylvania in 2014 in Berks County. It can now be found in 13 different counties. While central PA has not been affected, scientists say it could be only a matter of time.

NASCAR and Advance Auto Parts are highlighting short-tracks across North America by giving them a chance to win money, by fan votes, for facility enhancements or to establish community-based programs with schools, nonprofits or other local organizations. NASCAR Cup Series star Ryan Blaney made the announcement Saturday on social media.

New owner of The Johnstown Galleria says hands on approach can save mall
