Lafferty, 3 Nittany Lions invited to Penguins prospect camp

PITTSBURGH -- Hollidaysburg's Sam Lafferty will return to the Pittsburgh Penguins annual prospect development camp this week. The Brown University rising senior is expected to compete in the camp which runs June 28-July 1 at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry, Pa. The camp roster also includes three Penn State players. Centers Chase Berger and Nikita Pavlychev - a 2015 Penguins' seventh round draft choice - along with winger Andrew Sturtz are listed on the roster released Monday by the team.

Safeway removes self-checkout at Bay Area stores following shoplifting spike

OAKLAND, Calif. (TND) — Safeway has removed self-checkout machines at several stores in the San Francisco Bay Area following a rise in theft, according to KRON. The supermarket chain is reportedly removing the machines to crack down on shoplifting. Operational changes have been made at select stores throughout the Bay Area given the increasing amount of theft,” Safeway told the outlet. “Those updates include adjustments to the front end of the store to deter shoplifting.

New technology is helping veterans cope with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and other anxiety disorders. Psychologists at the James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center are using video games that utilize neuro-feedback in order to re-train the brain to be less reactive to triggers. The treatment gives the patient feedback on what's happening in their brain in real-time. It works by attaching sensors to a person’s head, over specific regions of the brain.

Conemaugh Health System holds ribbon cutting for new Ebensburg building

EBENSBURG, Pa (WJAC) — A ribbon cutting took place Thursday for the new Conemaugh Health System building on Cook Road in Ebensburg. Health system officials said at least five Ebensburg offices will be combined into one. Some services the facility will offer include urgent care, primary care and diagnostics. The vice president of Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center said that a fixed CT scanner and a women's imaging center are also there.

Windber looking to become new home of 75-room hotel

WINDBER, Pa. - A hotel coming to Windber took a big step forward Tuesday. Borough manager Jim Furmanchik said a feasibility study conducted by Hospitality Marketers International came back extremely favorable. He said the study showed the borough could support a 75-room hotel. Furmanchik said representatives were impressed with the area’s Flood City Elite baseball fields and Iron House complex. He added it would be the closest hotel to the Flight 93 Memorial, which would make the borough a prime location.
