Dog park risks closure after founder and president passes away

Somerset County, PA — Jager and Friends Dog Park is a non-profit organization and corporation, in Somerset County. For 13 years its founder Jim Atchison, treasurer Judy Rach, and others managed and maintained the property for the public. Rach says it began with the help of other community members, turning it from a baron parcel of pavement to one of the top 10 dog parks in Pennsylvania. That's according to the PhillyByte magazine.

Filming in Everett for Apple TV series gets pushed back

EVERETT, Pa (WJAC) — People from Bedford County may soon recognize one of their small towns on the big screen. Everett Borough will be featured in the Paramount Network and Apple TV series, "Defending Jacob." On Saturday, there were crews filming on Main Street in Everett and at the abandoned turnpike tunnels in Breezewood. Filming was supposed to begin early in the morning, but according to the show's location manager, Drew Nicholas, it was pushed back to later in the day.

Major drug bust nets 17 arrests in Jefferson County

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. -- State Police announced a major drug bust Wednesday in Jefferson County. They have arrested 17 people on various drug-related offenses, including heroin, methamphetamine and cocaine. Those charged include: Eric Kerestesy, 34, Punxsutawney, Heroin. Mary Lou Smith, 48, Rossiter, Cocaine. Adam Lowmaster, 32, Punxsutawney, Meth. Stephen Bouch, 24,Punxsutawney, Heroin. David Walker, 32, Pittsburgh, Cocaine. Ashley Vega, 28, Falls Creek, Heroin. Kayla Gianvito, 31, White Oak, Heroin. Bobbie Jo Wright, 40, Rossiter, Subutex (pills).

Senior prank forces closure of PA high school

Dauphin County, PA — A senior prank forced a Pennsylvania high school to close its doors on Thursday. According to a statement from the Susquehanna Township School District, in Dauphin County, officials say the prank will require substantial clean up. They say the school was closed for in-person learning and events out of an abundance of caution. The statement did not go into details about the prank but only that it was widespread and there was no damage to the infrastructure.

Staff at the Altoona VA hospital distribute hundreds of masks to area veterans

ALTOONA, Pa (WJAC) — Employees at the James E van Zandt VA medical center in Altoona handed out between 700 and 1,000 washable cloth masks on Wednesday to veterans. The masks will help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and any veteran who has a VA identification card can receive one. The masks were made by the doctors, nurses and the administrative staff. The staff says close to 1,700 masks have been produced in the past two weeks and the employees have been excited to help.

Steelers sign WR Denzel Mims to practice squad

Pittsburgh (WJAC) — The Pittsburgh Steelersannounced Tuesday that they have signed wide-receiver Denzel Mims to their practice squad. Mims was drafted by the New York Jets in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He recently spent time with the Detroit Lions organization but did not see any playing time after suffering an ankle injury during training camp. Mims appeared in 33 games with the Jets, from 2020 to 2022, where he caught 42 total passes for 676 yards and no touchdowns.

Clearfield County retail stores reopen during yellow phase

DuBois, PA — For Jennifer Jackson, owner of Brady Street Florist in DuBois, the coronavirus pandemic hit her business hard. She expected a big break during the spring but all of her wedding and prom engagements were cancelled. Since transitioning into the yellow phase today, Jackson said business is looking up with Mother's Day right around the corner. Since people aren't visiting their parents during the pandemic, she's been sending out a lot flower deliveries.

FCC revokes license of Somerset Co. radio host Roger Wahl

Somerset Co., PA (WJAC) — An update now to the ongoing legal battle between the FCC and Somerset County radio personality Roger Wahl. According to an order that was made public last week, the FCC has officially revoked Wahl's license. In 2020, Wahl pleaded guilty to several charges related to a criminal investigation in which police say that he tried to solicit strangers to rape his female friend by setting up a fake, online dating profile.

Local family seeks support for sudden loss of beloved son in fatal York County crash

The mother of 24-year-old Jesse McKenzie, who was reportedly killed Wednesday morning in a crash in York County, says she was told about her son’s death by his fiancé. She says he grew up in the Meyersdale area of Somerset County. She says her son died from blunt force trauma. She says her family is overwhelmed with emotion, as well as the pressure of covering funeral costs. She says her son had no insurance.
