'They think they're in love:' online Romance Scams increasing in Cambria County

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — Imagine going on a dating website looking for love, but ending up falling for a scammer. The "master of disguise" pretends to be somebody else, luring those seeking romance into a "romance scam" instead. "They want to believe that they have this relationship. They want to believe it." That's what M. Veil Griffith -- the Administrator for the Cambria County Area Agency on Aging -- told 6 News after seeing an increase in these scams.

Central PA Art Fest, Heritage Days cancel 2021 in-person events

CENTRE COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — There will be no in-person event this summer for the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, the Board of Directors announced Thursday citing coronavirus concerns. Up to this point, Arts Fest organizers would not give a definitive answer on whether the event, normally held in July, would be at least partially in person. The festival was completely cancelled last year because of the pandemic. Organizers say that although they’re encouraged by the number of Americans receiving vaccines, the ongoing public health guidance makes it impossible for them to produce the beloved event.

Coalport residents continue cleanup after flash flooding

COALPORT -- The cleanup continues after flooding swept through parts of western Pennsylvania this week. One of the areas hit hardest was Coalport in Clearfield County. Neighbors said it came fast but it caused a lot of damage to basements, businesses and street corners. Water still flows through the town of Coalport and onto Main Street as cars splash through puddles. The fire department is doing their part to drain some areas and clean debris off the sidewalks.

Ringling Bros. circus cars find new home, role

DUBOIS - Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus said its final farewell to a sold-out crowd in May, but what was known as "The Greatest Show on Earth" wasn't confined to a big-top tent or big-city arena. The greatness was also on the rails. Two of the last circus cars are now at home in DuBois at The Depot at Doolittle's on Rich Highway. Their owner, Dr. Jeffrey Rice, said he got his hands on the ring master's car and a car that housed eight employees, such as the elephant trainer or members of the high wire act.

11-year-old reels in exotic Pacu with human-like teeth from neighborhood pond

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (KOKH) — The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (ODWC) said an 11-year-old boy caught an exotic Pacu in a neighborhood pond. A Pacu is a South American fish closely related to the Piranha but with human-like teeth, experts said. Pacu is an exotic, invasive species that can damage local ecosystems. "Do not release your pets," the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation urged in a social media post. "

Hanging Gardens LLC purchases Johnstown property, hopes to create up to 300 jobs

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — The Johnstown Redevelopment Authority announced that Hanging Gardens LLC has purchased the building they had been renting. The property sits at 108 Iron Street in Johnstown. Hanging Gardens entered into a lease agreement with the authority for the same location in 2018, but the authority had owned the property since 2004. The sale was finalized on Friday. It will allow for the expansion of Hanging Gardens and will put the property back into taxation.

Many aren't wearing masks at Punxsutawney Festival in Park

Punxsutawney, PA — At the Punxsutawney Festival in the Park there's a lot of activity going on this 4th of July Weekend. But one thing you don't see, according to some of the vendors, is a lot of people wearing masks. The Punxsutawney Festival in the Park kicked off last weekend. Some vendors I spoke with said it took a lot of preparation to avoid the coronavirus. Who's paying for clergy abuse settlements?

HOLLIDAYSBURG -- It was reported for years that the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown paid for settlements and fees involving alleged clergy abuse through insurance and investment profits. The Associated Press reported in May 2004 that "the diocese said it will continue discussions with various insurance companies to recover the cost" of a 21-person settlement that cost the diocese millions.
