Baylor names State College native Matt Rhule as new football coach

WACO, Texas - Matt Rhule is the new coach at Baylor, where he takes over a beleaguered Big 12 Conference program after winning 20 games over the past two seasons at Temple. Rhule, a State College native and former Penn State linebacker from 1994-97, becomes the full-time replacement for two-time Big 12 champion coach Art Briles. Briles was dismissed after a scathing report over the university's handling of sexual assault complaints, including some against football players.

Centre Co. election board says its 'too late' to file lawsuit challenging mail-in ballots

CENTRE COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — The "Battle of the Ballots" is heating up in Centre County, where close to 100 primary election ballots remain under review. The county election board contends that the group challenging the validity of the ballots filed their court suit "too late." In review, 95 mail-in ballots from April’s primary election were flagged with possible problems on how they were dated or not dated. The county election board decided to include the ballots in the final count, but before they were certified, a court suit was filed, claiming the ballots shouldn't be counted due to the dating errors.

Houtzdale home deemed 'a total loss', says fire chief

HOUTZDALE, Pa (WJAC) — UPDATE: According to the Houtzdale Fire Chief, the house fire that occurred earlier Saturday afternoon at 33 Wall Street has been deemed a "total loss." Thankfully, the two residents that were home at the time were able to get out safely. Fire officials have determined the cause of the fire to be electrical and that it originated in the home's attached garage. The fire chief confirmed that at least 9 or 10 crews responded to the scene and that roads leading to the house are still closed or blocked off as crews continue to clean up.

Penn Highlands implements web cameras at NICU unit

DuBois, PA — According to Suzanne McCullough, Director of Penn Highland's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, they implemented a NICVIEW web camera to provide 24/7 access for family members to see their newborns. She said the parents receive a log in for the online portal to see their babies virtually anytime, anywhere. McCullough said the cameras have been up and running for about a week now. Since then, she said they've connected with family members and friends from at least six different states.

Two women charged for string of thefts from Ulta Beauty stores in Pa, other states

ALTOONA, Pa (WJAC) — Police say two Maryland women have been charged for their involvement in a string of retail thefts from Ulta Beauty stores in Pennsylvania and surrounding states, according to a press release. Logan Township police say on Feb. 20, officers were dispatched to the Ulta store in Altoona for a reported retail theft in which two black females threatened the employees with mace while they stole items from the store.

Clearfield County Fair board making changes to parade etiquette

Clearfield County, PA (WJAC) — The Clearfield County Fair is scheduled to start early next week with the official kickoff parade Monday. But this year, the fair board is making some changes as to what is acceptable on the parade route. “Not throwing candy from a moving vehicle along the parade route,” says Clearfield County Fair Manager Greg Hallstrom. It's a rule, fair officials say, that has been on the books for years, but hasn't been enforced until now.

Nintendo to unveil Switch successor as profits soar

TOKYO (AP) — Japanese video-game maker Nintendo said Tuesday that it will make an announcement about a successor to its Switch home console sometime before March 2025. In reporting its financial results, Nintendo gave no details about the announcement, including about whether it would launch that successor product during this fiscal year, or just announce its plans for it. "We will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year.

Parents of Idaho University murder suspect subpoenaed to testify in PA

Monroe County, PA — The parents of the man charged in the murder of four university of Idaho students have been subpoenaed. A source familiar with the situation says Bryan Kohberger's parents were asked to testify before a Monroe County, Pennsylvania investigative grand jury. Kohberger’s father is expected to testify Thursday before the impaneled grand jury in a sealed proceeding in Pennsylvania. The source says his mother has already testified.

Planned Parenthood office vandalized in Wilkes-Barre

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (AP) — Officials say a man broke into a Planned Parenthood office in northeastern Pennsylvania, smashing glass doors and painting graffiti on the walls. Melissa Reed, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Keystone, said surveillance images show a man throwing a brick through a window of the Wilkes-Barre office at about 2 a.m. Monday. She said the same man returned about an hour later with another brick, smashed other windows, climbed through the door and spray-painted graffiti including a biblical verse in red.

Trump targets Democratic stronghold with Bronx rally to woo minority voters

NEW YORK (AP) — Former President Donald Trump will campaign in one of the most Democratic counties in the nation Thursday, holding a rally in the South Bronx to woo minority voters days before a Manhattan jury will begin deliberations on whether to convict him of felony charges in his criminal hush money trial. Trump will address supporters in Crotona Park, a public green space in a borough that is among the city's most diverse and its most impoverished, a change from the majority-white areas where he holds most of his rallies.
