Annual THON 5K takes place at Penn State to fight against childhood cancer

UNIVERSITY PARK – The 17th Annual THON 5K was held on Pennsylvania State’s campus. Several runners came out to take part in the event to raise money to directly benefit the Four Diamonds at Penn State’s Children’s hospital. They will use to help cover 100 percent of the costs of patient care, as well as to fund critical, life-saving research. THON is one of the largest 5K races in central Pennsylvania.

Cambria County man facing felony charges after starting fire in family home

A Cambria County man is facing felony charges after lighting a fire in a bedroom after a verbal altercation Thursday, police said. According to a criminal complaint, police were dispatched to a home on the 100 block of Lakeview Road in Cambria Township after reports of an individual was threatening family members. Police said they spoke with the family and were informed that Mark Gergely, 47, had went to the residence and was chasing a family member around and making verbal threats.

Man saved from certain death on Everest criticized for thanking sponsors instead of savior sherpa

MOUNT EVEREST, Nepal (TND) — A seasoned climber who found himself at death's door on Mount Everest was incredibly fortunate to be rescued, but after he thanked his sponsors instead of the sherpa who saved him, he has been the recipient of some repeated online criticism. Malaysian mountaineer Ravichandran Tharumalingam was trapped in Mount Everest's infamous oxygen-limited and freezing "death zone" on May 18 when he was discovered by Gelje Sherpa, who was himself taking a client to the top of the world's highest mountain according to CNN and Insider.

Brookville woman charged for attempted murder of ex-boyfriend

Jefferson Co., PA (WJAC) — A Brookville woman is facing multiple charges, including felonies, after attempting to kill her ex-boyfriend last Thursday morning in Jefferson County, state police say. According to a criminal complaint, state police responded to a call from the mother of Paige Lander, 23, saying she received a text message from her daughter just after 4 a.m. saying she was sorry and that she was depressed and had suicidal thoughts.

Centre Co. woman jailed after attacking two people during argument

Centre Co., PA (WJAC) — A Moshannon woman is behind bars in Centre County, accused of strangling another person over an argument about a cowboy hat. Police say that on Saturday, 33-year-old Amber Shay was reportedly drinking alcohol at her Snow Shoe Township home when the argument began. Shay is accused of shoving the victim onto a bed before ripping off a cowboy hat and choking the victim. Police say when Shay’s husband intervened, another argument began.
