In its 29th year in uptown Somerset the Fire and Ice Festival is battling some challenges from the weather. Organizers said on Friday, the first day of the festival, fireworks had to be cancelled. On Saturday with high winds and snow falling, organizers said the festival is made for this weather. “We take this weather as a blessing because we live in the mountains, and we are just going to enjoy our season,” community engagement director for Somerset Inc.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin committed Monday to keeping U.S. weapons moving to Ukraine as Kyiv faces one of its toughest moments against a renewed assault by Russia. Austin and as many as 50 defense leaders from Europe and around the world were meeting Monday to coordinate more military aid to Ukraine, as Kyiv tries to hold off a Russian offensive in the northeast while launching its own massive assault on the Russia-occupied Crimean Peninsula.

Student protesters put fake bloodied corpses on University of Michigan regent's lawn

(TND) — Protesters demanding the University of Michigan divest from companies perceived as helping Israel in its war against Hamas staged demonstrations at school officials’ homes Wednesday. Dozens of members of the university’s chapters of Jewish Voice for Peace, Students Allied for Freedom and Equality (SAFE) and the Transparency, Accountability, Humanity, Reparations, Investment, Resistance Coalition set up fake bloodied corpses, tents, cribs and children’s toys on Regent Sarah Hubbard’s lawn to hold her “accountable” for her alleged role in the war.

Windber community dresses up as ghosts to set world record

WINDBER -- If you were driving through Windber in Somerset County Saturday afternoon, you may have noticed dozens of people draped in white sheets near the side of the road. That's because more than 200 people attempted to break a Guinness world record for the largest gathering of people dressed as ghosts. The record was first by Sony Pictures in Singapore in June 2016 when 263 people were dressed as ghosts as a part of a red-carpet event for the movie Ghostbusters.

Altoona Curve announce 2021 schedule; will open the season on May 4th

ALTOONA, Pa (WJAC) — The Altoona Curve announced their 2021 schedule on Thursday, with Opening Night scheduled for Tuesday, May 4 against the Bowie Baysox. According to a press release, the Curve's 23rd season will include 60 home games and will feature "no less than 6 games and no more than 17 games per month." "We could not be “more” happier to have a schedule for the 2021 season," said Curve general manager Derek Martin.

Johnstown man dies in rollover crash

JOHNSTOWN - State police in Ebensburg said Patrick Knapp of Johnstown died Monday morning in a crash in Cambria County. Knapp, 44, was pronounced dead at the scene by Cambria County Coroner Jeff Lees. Police said Knapp's Chevrolet Colorado truck was traveling west on Route 56 in Dale Borough. His vehicle left the road near the Bedford Street exit ramp and rolled over several times around 11:04 a.m. Knapp was not wearing his seat belt, police said.

Portage Borough working to repeal 'obscene materials' ordinances following federal lawsuit

According to the agenda for the Portage Borough council meeting from Monday, work is being done to repeal three ordinances named in a federal lawsuit filed by Bodies in Motion owner Gary Vaughn. The lawsuit, filed last December, names 11 defendants, including Portage Borough itself, its mayor, borough manager, five members of council, and three members of the police department. Vaughn said he argues the borough has some "unenforceable and unconstitutional ordinances"

Pro-Palestinian protesters break through barricades, fencing to retake MIT encampment

NEW YORK (AP) — Pro-Palestinian protesters that had been blocked by police from accessing an encampment at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Monday broke through fencing, linked arms and encircled tents that remained there, as Columbia University canceled its university-wide commencement ceremony following weeks of pro-Palestinian protests. Sam Ihns, a graduate student at MIT studying mechanical engineering and a member of MIT Jews for a Ceasefire, said the group has been at the encampment for the past two weeks and that they were calling for an end to the killing of thousands of people in Gaza.
