Rare black deer spotting in northern Michigan

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- Even when you're used to seeing deer, sometimes you must do a double take. This rare "pitch black" deer was recently spotted and photographed in northern Michigan by viewer John Roach. Steve Griffith, a Wildlife Biologist with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), says the black deer spotted is a rarity, called a "melanistic whitetail.” He says they’re even harder to spot than albino deer.

Shoppers react to news of DuBois Kmart closure

DUBOIS - More than 100 Kmart and Sears stores across the nation are set to close this spring, including the Kmart store on Shaffer Road in DuBois. Sears Holdings will close 108 Kmart stores and 42 Sears stores over the next few months. The company noted that on Dec. 27, it had informed associates at 30 Kmart stores and 16 Sears stores that their stores would be closing. On Wednesday, the company announced an additional 78 Kmart stores and 26 Sears stores would also close.

West Decatur couple charged after overdosing at Blair Co. Sheetz

Blair Co., PA (WJAC) — Authorities with the Altoona Police Department say a Clearfield County couple is facing child endangerment charges after they reportedly overdosed at a Blair County Sheetz over the weekend. Police say officers were dispatched to the store along East 25th Ave. around 8 p.m. Friday night for a report of an unconscious individual. Investigators say the unconscious male, identified as 30-year-old Jeffrey Hankerson II, was found lying on the floor of the store.

Apartment fire in Emporium displaces 13

EMPORIUM, Pa. - An apartment fire that broke out Tuesday night in Emporium has rekindled Wednesday. A state police fire marshal said the original fire broke out at a seven-unit apartment complex on East Allegheny Avenue at 10:19 p.m. Tuesday. The fire marshal said the fire started on a back porch on the second story. All seven units were occupied and housed a total of 13 people. Emporium Fire Chief Adam Johnson said the fire was contained to the second floor but the rest of the building suffered water damage.

Emporium man waited for woman outside bar prior to kidnapping, raping her

Cameron County, PA (WJAC) — State police in Cameron County say an Emporium man is facing several felonies, accused of kidnapping a woman and driving her to her home where he allegedly sexually assaulted her. Authorities say, during the early morning hours of Sunday, January 22nd, troopers were dispatched to a residence along East 5th Street for a report of a possible rape. According to the affidavit, troopers say they observed several, visible injuries to the female victim, including multiple cuts and abrasions to her face, torso, arms and legs.
