A 23-year-old Altoona man has been charged with vehicular homicide stemming from a December race that left two people dead.

According to a probable-cause affidavit, at about 1:50 a.m. on Dec. 22, Caleb Criste, Grant Avenue, and Collie Brown raced each other in vehicles on 10th Avenue in Altoona.

The race ended when Brown crashed into a light post and was ejected from the vehicle, according to the affidavit. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger in Brown’s vehicle was also ejected and later died at an area hospital. Another passenger was also injured.

During the race, both vehicles reached speeds that were about twice the speed limit, according to the affidavit.

Criste has been charged with two third-degree felony counts of homicide by vehicle, three third-degree felony counts of aggravated assault by vehicle, two first-degree misdemeanor counts of involuntary manslaughter, five second-degree misdemeanor counts of recklessly endangering another person and three summary offenses.

He was arraigned Thursday before District Judge Fred B. Miller, of Tyrone, and was sent to the Blair County Prison in lieu of a $350,000 bond.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Oct. 4 before District Judge Daniel C. DeAntonio, of Altoona.
